01 / THE RIGHT FIT

A transformer.
A coordinated cable interface.

Pad-mounted equipment places the transformer and its connection compartments in a ground-level enclosure. The layout must suit the site, cable routing and operating access.

The feed arrangement, terminations and protection are as important as the transformer rating. VoltGrid helps turn the single-line diagram and site requirements into a defined equipment scope.

Design for the cable system

Confirm interface ratings, termination format, cable bend space and entry locations.

Design for the location

Review enclosure access, foundation details, corrosion exposure and service clearances.

02 / CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

Choose the duty
before the enclosure.

Distribution loads and renewable energy duties require different technical inputs, even when the equipment has a similar external appearance.

Single-phase distribution reference configuration
01RESIDENTIAL & LOCAL SERVICE

Single-phase distribution

A ground-level format for a specified single-phase distribution service.

  • Confirm the service voltage and connection
  • Review cable interfaces and protective devices
  • Coordinate enclosure access and pad layout
Discuss this configuration
Three-phase distribution reference configuration
02COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL

Three-phase distribution

For cable-fed facilities, campuses and distribution networks.

  • Define load profile and transformer rating
  • Specify feed, terminals and LV cable or bus connections
  • Review switching, fusing and access requirements
Discuss this configuration

03SOLAR / WIND / STORAGE

Renewable energy duty

Project-specific transformer review for renewable generation or storage systems.

  • Provide inverter or generator electrical data
  • Describe harmonics, loading cycles and power-flow duty
  • Coordinate collection-system voltage and protection
Discuss this configuration

Renewable and storage duties require a dedicated review of the connected equipment and operating profile.

Radial or loop feed?
Start with the network diagram.

Specify the intended operating arrangement and the required switching and cable interfaces.

Radial feed

A supply path feeding the transformer. Confirm incoming cable connections and the required protection.

Loop feed

Additional cable interfaces supporting the specified network arrangement. Define switching, isolation and operating requirements.

Live-front or dead-front

Select the termination arrangement required by the utility or project. Interface geometry and ratings must be compatible.

03 / TECHNICAL SELECTION

Define the rating.
Detail the connections.

Use the single-line diagram, site layout and cable schedule to build the enquiry. Final configuration and ratings are established in the project proposal.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you
specify.

Practical questions about pad mounted transformer selection and project requirements.

Ask a technical question
How do radial and loop feed arrangements differ?

The arrangements differ in their cable interfaces and intended network operation. Provide the single-line diagram and switching requirements so the transformer connections can be configured accordingly.

Is every pad-mounted transformer suitable for renewable energy?

No. Inverter or generator characteristics, harmonic content, load cycles and protection requirements need to be considered. Storage projects may also involve bidirectional power-flow duties.

Can the enclosure be used in a corrosive environment?

Specify the actual environmental exposure and required material or coating system. Enclosure details, terminals and accessories should all be reviewed for that environment.

What is needed to confirm cable compatibility?

Provide the voltage and current requirements, termination standard, interface dimensions, conductor information and cable entry arrangement. Cable labels or photographs alone may not establish compatibility.

What installation information should be agreed before delivery?

Confirm foundation and cable-entry dimensions, working clearances, lifting arrangements, access and the equipment earthing interface. Installation must follow the approved project drawings and equipment instructions.
